Gary Trauner, the Congressional candidate for Wyoming's at-large district, has shown the key difference between Democrats and Republicans in
calling for the resignation of William Jefferson.
I'd like to put my two cents in on the recent story regarding Congressman William Jefferson, a Representative in Louisiana. As you may know, (according to the FBI) Mr. Jefferson was caught on tape taking bribe money from an FBI informant, and the same marked bills were later found in his freezer at his house.
Folks, this is a no-brainer - he should resign immediately. If he refuses to do so, the House should meet and look at taking appropriate disciplinary and/or punitive action.
Now, on to the subject of the recent search of his office and the "outrage" of House leaders on this issue: While appropriate safeguards and discretion are required, the search was done pursuant to a properly issued warrant. To claim that an elected official's office is a safe haven that can never be searched is to claim that elected officials are different from the rest of us.
NO Congressman or elected official is above the law. It seems that many of our elected officials have forgotten this simple truth. And it is one of the main reasons why Congress and this Administration are held in such low esteem today by regular folks in this country.
Boy, do we need change...
Exactly. This highlights the key difference between Democrats and Republicans - Democrats speak out against corruption regardless of party affiliation; Republicans don't. Republicans circle the wagons and protect their own. For example, there has not been one peep from any GOP Senator, Congressman, or Governor taking a stand on the issues and declaring that what Karl Rove has done is wrong.
Throughout the last 40 years the Republicans have been carrying on claiming that our moral values have gone into the tank. But now, when they have had a chance to show that they are better, instead, they have gotten much worse. Apparently, the only time moral values are in decay is when Bill Clinton is engaged in an affair with Monica. But it's OK if you're a Republican.
And to bring it closer to home for Wyoming, Barbara Cubin, the incumbent congresswoman, who only took 55% of the vote last time, took money from Jack Abramoff.
So, the choice could not be clearer - the choice is between a well-respected businessman who plays by the rules and who is an unapologetic Democrat in a red state and an entrenched incumbent who is part of the GOP culture of corruption and who takes money from Jack Abramoff.
